Apple Dumplings

Total Time: 1 hr 5 mins Preparation Time: 15 mins Cook Time: 50 mins

Ingredients

  • 3 small baking apples, peeled, halved and cored
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup chilled butter, cut into half inch cubes
  • 3 tablespoons butter, melted (for brushing)
  • 1/2 cup water (you may not need all of it)
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans
  • 1/2 cup coarse sugar (optional)
  • whipped cream or vanilla ice cream, for serving

Recipe

  • 1 in a food processor, combine flour, butter, salt and water. pulse until coarse crumbles form.
  • 2 divide dough into 3 equal portions and flatten into disks. wrap each disk in plastic wrap and chill in refrigerator for about 30 minutes.
  • 3 meanwhile, preheat oven to 350°f and prepare apples.
  • 4 in a small bowl, mix brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and pecans.
  • 5 take dough from refrigerator and roll out into 9"-10" rounds.
  • 6 place half of an apple in the center of the dough and top with 1/3 of the brown sugar mixture. place the other apple half on top.
  • 7 pull the dough up and around the apple to cover and pinch seams to close.
  • 8 place apples on a lightly greased baking dish, seam side down, and brush tops with butter.
  • 9 if desired, press course sugar granules lightly into the tops of the dumplings.
  • 10 bake for about 50 minutes.
  • 11 serve warm with a side of whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
