Apple Dumplings

Ingredients
- 3 small baking apples, peeled, halved and cored
- 2 cups flour
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup chilled butter, cut into half inch cubes
- 3 tablespoons butter, melted (for brushing)
- 1/2 cup water (you may not need all of it)
- 3/4 cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/2 cup chopped pecans
- 1/2 cup coarse sugar (optional)
- whipped cream or vanilla ice cream, for serving
Recipe
- 1 in a food processor, combine flour, butter, salt and water. pulse until coarse crumbles form.
- 2 divide dough into 3 equal portions and flatten into disks. wrap each disk in plastic wrap and chill in refrigerator for about 30 minutes.
- 3 meanwhile, preheat oven to 350°f and prepare apples.
- 4 in a small bowl, mix brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and pecans.
- 5 take dough from refrigerator and roll out into 9"-10" rounds.
- 6 place half of an apple in the center of the dough and top with 1/3 of the brown sugar mixture. place the other apple half on top.
- 7 pull the dough up and around the apple to cover and pinch seams to close.
- 8 place apples on a lightly greased baking dish, seam side down, and brush tops with butter.
- 9 if desired, press course sugar granules lightly into the tops of the dumplings.
- 10 bake for about 50 minutes.
- 11 serve warm with a side of whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
